The main level logs are now high enough for the purlins to be placed for the second floor.
Purlins are another name for floor joists, but these you will see on the ceiling of the main floor. Tongue and Groove wood will be nailed to the top of the purlin and that's the ceiling for the main floor. It could also be the wood floor for the second level, but for sound insulation we are not going to leave it that way. Here is the process for setting the purlins.
First the notches were cut out of the 14th high log. This was done with the chain saw.
Randy then got in the fork lift and drove the purlins
around to the front of the cabin.
Up and over the front wall they came. Cameron and I were nervously watching and guiding him to the exact location of the notches.
Randy and Cameron setting the first purlin in place!!
This is a close up picture of how the purlin sits in the notches. Pretty tight.
The Kitchen ceiling. Picture tongue and groove running in between the purlins.
View from the top - well the top of the ladder anyway!
Not too bad for three weeks work.
Now if the next level will go as fast, we'll get the roof on
before it snows for sure!
